as posted by the channelTrump's first impeachment - 2020
Ahead of a historic House vote on impeachment, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stood next to a placard that quoted the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance, emphasizing the use of "republic" in the expression. "Our founders' vision of a Republic is under threat from actions from the White House. That is why today, as Speaker of the House, I solemnly and sadly open the debate on the impeachment of the President of the United States," Pelosi said. "It is tragic that the president's reckless actions make impeachment necessary. He gave us no choice." Pelosi's remarks opened up hours of planned debate over the two articles of impeachment that charge President Donald Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. If passed, the process will then head for a trial in the Senate, where Republicans have a majority. Earlier in the day, the House voted to approve rules for the vote. Following her opening remarks, Democratic lawmakers applauded Pelosi.
