Rep. Adam Schiff, the lead House manager in Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, said the framers of the U.S. Constitution, including Alexander Hamilton, allowed for impeachment as an important check on the president’s power. “They feared that a president would subvert our democracy by abusing the awesome power of his office for his own personal or political gain,” Schiff said, speaking during opening arguments in the impeachment trial. The House of Representatives impeached the president in December on the two articles. The trial will determine whether Trump is convicted of those charges and removed from office, or acquitted.
