Rep. Adam Schiff, the lead House manager in the Senate impeachment trial, argued on Jan. 22, that the money President Donald Trump withheld from Ukraine is not “charity” but is important to U.S. national security interests. “These funds, they don’t just benefit Ukraine, they benefit the security of the United States by ensuring that Ukraine is equipped to defend its own borders against Russian aggression,” Schiff said in opening arguments on the Senate floor. “This isn’t charity, it’s about our defense as much as it’s about Ukraine’s,” he added. The House of Representatives impeached the president in December on the two articles. The trial will determine whether Trump is convicted of those charges and removed from office, or acquitted.
