Rep. Adam Schiff, the lead House impeachment manager in President Donald Trump’s Senate impeachment trial, explained why Americans ought to care about Ukraine, saying the country is an ally. Schiff cited when Ukraine reluctantly relinquished their nuclear weapons they inherited from the Soviet Union, at the U.S.’ urging. The U.S. was worried about proliferation, while Ukraine was worried about Russian aggression, Schiff said. “I hope we care about that because they did give them up and -- you know what? Just what they feared took place, the Russians moved across their border and they remain occupying party of Ukraine.” Schiff added that the U.S. broke the “word of America” to Ukraine when President Donald Trump pressured to country to investigate his political opponents. House managers, who act as prosecutors in the Senate trial, began presenting arguments on Jan. 22. The White House will give its defense after the House managers have been allowed 24 hours over the course of three days to present their case. The House of Representatives impeached the president in December on two articles--abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The trial will determine whether Trump is convicted of those charges and removed from office, or acquitted.
