Trump's first impeachment - 2020

At the impeachment trial, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., posed a question that flipped the scenario between President Donald Trump and Ukraine. She said it wouldn't be acceptable for President Volodymyr Zelensky to offer Trump dirt on his rivals in exchange for hundreds of millions of military aid, so why wouldn't the reverse be impeachable? House manager Rep. Jerry Nadler said “abuse of power is clearly established” in Trump’s case, as is bribery “beyond any doubt.” Deputy White House counsel Patrick Philbin pushed back on Warren’s hypothetical, saying that the charges brought by the House of Representatives do not include bribery, nor extortion. “A hypothetical that is contrary to what the facts were here...that’s all besides the point,” Philbin said. He pointed to the facts already in the case, and said a crime cannot now be asserted, as it wasn’t part of the original articles of impeachment. Senators had their first chance to ask questions of the House managers and President Donald Trump’s legal team on Wednesday, Jan. 29. That came after both sides were given three days, respectively, to present their case. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles--abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The questions come ahead of a vote on whether to bring forward witnesses and documents as part of the Senate trial. The Senate must now decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office.
