Asked by Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., to follow up on a question regarding campaign finance violations as they relate to accepting assistance to a foreign country, House manager Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said it would send a “terrible message” to autocrats, dictators and enemies of the U.S. if the president and his team indicated that it is acceptable to solicit foreign interference or accept “political dirt” in order to get ahead in an election. He said campaign interference is not just a mistake, as a member of President Donald Trump’s legal team argued, but wrong. “It strikes at the very heart of what the framers of the Constitution were concerned about,” said Jeffries. He noted that the chair of the Federal Elections Commission has stated that it is illegal for any candidate to accept help from a foreign country. “This is impeachable, and it should lead to the removal of President Donald John Trump,” said Jeffries. Senators had a second day to ask questions of the House managers and Trump’s legal team on Thursday, Jan. 30. That came after both sides were given three days, respectively, to present their case. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The questions come ahead of a vote on whether to bring forward witnesses and documents as part of the Senate trial. The Senate must now decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office.
