Asked by Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., why Americans should be concerned about foreign interference in U.S. elections, House manager Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., said intelligence communities have debunked the claim that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 election — a theory President Donald Trump and some of his associates have perpetuated. Crow said even President Vladimir Putin expressed relief that this theory helped turned attention away from Russia’s complicity. “This is a battle over resolve...over information and disinformation,” Crow said. He added that if the message at the very top of American leadership casts doubt upon the conclusion of the intelligence community that Russia interfered in the 2016 election, “that is dangerous...and that makes us less safe.” The argument came on the second day senators asked questions of the House managers and President Donald Trump’s legal team on Thursday, Jan. 30. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles - abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
