Tim Kaine, D-Va., asked House managers during the Trump impeachment trial whether the president could be expected to cooperate with Congress on “any matter” if he is acquitted of the charges brought against him. Responding to the question, House manager Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said if Trump were not held accountable, it would mean “there is no constraint” on the current or future presidents. Schiff said Trump used his executive powers to “orchestrate a massive cover-up,” and that his lawyers scrambled to justify this cover-up. There “cannot be a better case than the one you have before you where obstruction is so complete and so categorical,” Schiff said.
Senators were given a second day to ask questions of the House managers and Trump’s legal team on Thursday, Jan. 30. That came after both sides were given three days, respectively, to present their case. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The questions come ahead of a vote on whether to bring forward witnesses and documents as part of the Senate trial. The Senate must now decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office.
