Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., asked during the impeachment trial on Jan. 30 whether Chief Justice Roberts is at risk of losing some of his legitimacy because he is presiding over a trial in which senators have refused to allow witnesses or evidence. House manager Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., responded by saying the trial does contribute to a “loss of confidence” in Roberts who has presided “admirably.” Schiff did say, however, that the lack of witnesses reflects poorly on his fellow lawmakers. Schiff said while the U.S. doesn’t always live up to its ideals, this impeachment trial is part of its “constitutional heritage,” a “remedy” for the sort of behavior that occurred under President Donald Trump. Senators asked questions of House managers and Trump’s legal team for the second straight day on Thursday. That came after both sides were given three days, respectively, to present their case. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The questions come ahead of a vote on whether to bring forward witnesses and documents as part of the Senate trial. The Senate must now decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office.
