Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said the American people had been robbed of learning the full record of President Donald Trump’s actions toward Ukraine, and that the Senate process that will determine whether Trump is convicted or acquitted of the charges “was not a trial in any real sense.” “I have always been a conservative on the subject of impeachment,” King said, adding he does not think it should be a tool to remove a president based on policy disagreements. “But this reluctance must give way.” He called Trump’s actions “a deliberate series of acts” to serve his own personal interest. King expressed doubt that Trump had learned from his actions and said the only way to prevent him from doing it again is to remove him from office. On Feb. 4, senators weighed in for the second day on how they will vote on whether to remove Trump from office. The speeches come one day before the Senate will decide whether to convict or acquit Trump on two articles of impeachment--abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. After the Senate voted last week to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December.
