1:17Now PlayingAssistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Health, Adm. Brett Giroir told lawmakers on May 12 that any vaccine developed to address the coronavirus pandemic should be available to all Americans “regardless of income.”
“We need to be absolutely certain” that a treatment “reaches all segments of society regardless of their ability to pay or any other social determinants of health that there may be,” Giroir said. Giroir's comments were in response to a question by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Giroir and other leading U.S. health officials on Tuesday appeared before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions to answer questions about safely reopening schools and workplaces. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci, Centers on Disease Control and Prevention Direct Robert Redfield, and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn also spoke before the committee.
