Sen. Christopher Murphy, D-Conn., told several leading health officials on May 12 said that the information and guidance provided by federal officials on the pandemic has been inconsistent. “I worry that you’re trying to have it both ways,” Murphy said. “You say that states shouldn’t open too early, but then you don’t give us the resources to succeed. You work for a president who is, frankly, undermining our efforts to comply with the guidance you’ve given us.” Leading health officials who have coordinated the American response to the coronavirus pandemic answered questions from the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci, Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers on Disease Control and Prevention, Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Health Adm. Brett Giroir and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn appeared before lawmakers.
