2:40Now PlayingPBS NewsHour White House Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor said she will be watching for how the only Black Republican senator, Tim Scott, R-S.C., makes his case for why Donald Trump is his pick for president on the first night of the 2020 Republican National Convention. Scott recently proposed a police reform bill in response to the deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police, but it failed to pass the Senate. Alcindor said she was also interested to see what former Gov. Nikki Haley, a woman of color, will say in support of the incumbent president. Haley also served as U.S. ambassador to the U.N. under Trump. Other expected speakers include House minority whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Donald Trump, Jr., the president’s son. Alcindor spoke with PBS NewsHour political reporter Daniel Bush ahead of the first night of the Republican National Convention.
