WATCH: Barrett defends her position on the ACA, saying 'I have no animus’ toward it

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., asked Judge Amy Coney Barrett about President Trump’s position on the Affordable Care Act and how it squares with her own past criticism of the Obama-era health care law. In a 2017 law review article, Barrett wrote that Chief Justice John Roberts "pushed the Affordable Care Act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute” while serving on the Supreme Court. Klobuchar noted that Trump had made clear his intent to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act well before the article was published and pressed Barrett as to whether she had this in mind when authoring it. Barrett defended herself to Klobuchar, saying, “You’re suggesting that I have animus, or that I cut a deal with the president, and I was very clear yesterday that that isn’t what happened.” But Klobuchar expressed skepticism toward Barrett’s defense, noting that Republicans have already tried to overturn the ACA 70 times and are now bringing the case before a court on which Barrett will likely be sitting: “I find it very hard to believe that you didn’t understand that when you wrote the article.”
