5:15Now PlayingKristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, testified on Oct. 15 in the final day of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing for nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett.
Clarke said that her organization does not believe Barrett's record "reflects a strong commitment to upholding the Constitution or to fairly interpreting and apply civil rights laws." Clarke expressed concerns about how Barrett might approach voting rights, criminal justice issues, employment discrimination and reproductive rights-- issues that disproportionately affect communities of color, she said.
The hearing came about three weeks before Election Day. The judge did not appear before the committee on the final day of the hearing. Instead, both Republicans and Democrats called outside witnesses to speak to her record and approach to the law.
