Chris Coons, D-Del., questioned a legal panel about Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett’s record on diversity after she failed to name a book, study or law review the previous day that addressed racial discrimination and its legacy in American law. Randall Noel, who helped lead the evaluation of Barrett, said “we didn’t hear a hint of any concern by anyone” about her record on race. Coons said he was not trying to imply that there was concern, but rather that he was led to "question whether or not having broader diversity on our courts would bring into the decision-making role those who bring personal insight and experience, and whether or not all who serve on our bench and in Congress should be more aware of this challenge.” Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, pushed back on Coons' question, noting that Barrett has two adopted Black children from Haiti and “doesn’t need anybody preaching to her about the importance of diversity.”
