48:03Now PlayingBruce Castor, one of former President Trump’s lawyers in his second Senate impeachment trial, speaks about the constitutionality of the impeachment trial, which has been questioned by many Republicans because Trump is no longer in office. Democrats are arguing for the trial to proceed.
Castor said senators value being patriots before being partisan, and that members of the House of Representatives do not have that same value. Going forward with this trial will open the “floodgates” for more partisan impeachments, he argued. Trump is being tried for inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection in the U.S. Capitol, where five people died.
Castor also argued that the impeachment trial is violating Trump’s First Amendment right to freedom of speech. He added that those who want to move forward with the impeachment are afraid to lose against Trump in a future race.
