The 57-43 vote was the most bipartisan in history, with seven Republicans voting to convict but 10 votes shy of reaching the needed two-thirds majority needed.
Schumer said the trial was not about choosing country over party, but rather choosing country over Trump, and “43 Republican members chose Trump. They chose Trump. It should be a weight on their conscience today and it will be a weight on their conscience forever.” He said the seven Republicans who voted to convict were patriots, and the others lacked morality and courage.
While Trump was not convicted in the Senate, Schumer said he will be convicted in the court of public opinion. “January 6th will live as a day of infamy in the history of the United States of America. The failure to convict Donald Trump will live as a vote of infamy in the history of the United States Senate,” Schumer said.
