39:27Now PlayingMichael van der Veen, one of the defense lawyers for former President Donald Trump, delivered his closing argument in the Senate impeachment trial. Trump is charged with inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Van der Veen asserted that the House impeachment managers did not present sufficient evidence to demonstrate that Trump is responsible for the violence.
“No matter how much truly horrifying footage we see of the conduct of the rioters, and how much emotion has been injected into this trial, that does not change the fact that Mr. Trump is innocent of the charges against him,” van der Veen said.
House impeachment managers and Trump’s defense team offered their final statements in the impeachment trial on Feb. 13. The Senate will vote on whether to convict Trump on a charge of inciting the Capitol attack. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
