1:53Now PlayingFormer President Donald Trump responded to Vice President Kamala Harris on his economic vision during his opening remarks in their first and possibly only debate on Sept. 10, hosted by ABC in Philadelphia.
Harris said Trump’s economic plan of proposed tariffs would equal “sales tax” raising costs for American families.
Trump said the statement was incorrect, and instead touted his use of tariffs in his first term, while decrying inflation and immigration.
“We're doing tariffs on other countries, other countries are going to finally, after 75 years, pay us back for all that we've done for the world. And the tariff will be substantial in some cases. I took in billions and billions of dollars, as you know, from China. In fact, they never took the tariff off because it was so much money they can't, it would totally destroy everything that they've set out to do.”
Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee this summer after Biden gave a troubling debate performance in June, increasing calls for him to drop out of the race.
According to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, more than two-thirds of Americans say they will watch all or most of the debate. While many voters have already made up their minds, 14 percent of Americans say the debate will have a great impact on which candidate they choose.
