0:59Now PlayingGov. Tim Walz criticized Republicans' argument that states should be allowed to set their own abortion policies during the CBS Vice Presidential Debate on Tuesday.
He brought up the story of Amber Thurman, a Georgia resident who died after suffering a rare complication from taking abortion pills. The common abortion procedure she needed was outlawed in Georgia as part of restrictions enacted in the summer of 2022. Thurman had attempted to receive care in North Carolina before her death.
"The fact of the matter is," Walz said, "how can we as a nation say that your life and your rights, as a basic as the right to control your own body, is determined on geography?"
"There's a very real chance had Amber Thurman lived in Minnesota, she would be alive today," Walz said.
