10:21Now PlayingSen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., ranking member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, made his opening statement Tuesday in the confirmation hearing for defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth.
“The secretary is expected to be a fair, nonpartisan and responsible leader, as well as a trustworthy advocate for the men and women that he leads,” Reed said. “Mr. Hegseth, I do not believe that you are qualified to meet the overwhelming demands of this job.”
Reed said it was essential to “acknowledge the concerning public reports” alleging Hegseth has a history of financial mismanagement, racist and sexist remarks about people in uniform, alcohol abuse, sexual assault and misconduct, and other issues.
Hegseth is a military veteran and conservative media personality. President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking, and been criticized as a nominee for his controversial views on diversity and religion in the military.
