11:53Now PlayingSen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., chair of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, made his opening statement in the confirmation hearing for defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth Tuesday.
"The nominee is unconventional, just like that New York developer who rode down the escalator in 2015 to announce his candidacy for president. That may be what makes Mr. Hegseth an excellent choice to improve this unacceptable status quo that I just described," Wicker said.
Hegseth is a military veteran and conservative media personality. President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking, and been criticized as a nominee for his controversial views on diversity and religion in the military.
