4:03Now PlayingSecretary of state nominee Sen. Marco Rubio said that Iran’s government is at its weakest point “in recent memory, maybe ever,” and should never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.
“What cannot be allowed under any circumstances is an Iran and an Iranian regime that has the resources and the capability to restart and continue their sponsorship of terrorism,” Rubio said at his confirmation hearing Wednesday before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Rubio also emphatically drew a line between the Iranian regime and the Iranian people, saying that globally, there is no bigger difference between a citizenry and its government.
“In no way [are] the clerics who run that country representative of the people of that country and of its history and of contributions it's made to humanity,” he said.
Rubio, the senior senator from Florida, was also a one-time Republican presidential hopeful who ran against President-elect Trump. A former member of the Senate panel holding his confirmation hearing, Rubio also serves on the Select Committee on Intelligence.
