2:15Now PlayingJames Comey was indicted late Thursday, making the former FBI director, a longtime foe of President Donald Trump, the first former senior government official to face prosecution around the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Following the indictment, Trump continued his attacks on Comey, calling him “a Dirty Cop” and “a destroyer of lives” before saying “he was just assigned a Crooked Joe Biden appointed Judge, so he’s off to a very good start.”
U.S. District Judge Michael Nachmanoff was randomly assigned the case late Thursday, after a federal grand jury indicted Comey for making a false statement and obstructing a congressional proceeding during his September 2020 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The indictment came days after Trump chided Attorney General Pam Bondi on social media over her perceived lack of action against Comey and others. “We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility,” Trump said on Truth Social last Saturday. “They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), OVER NOTHING. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!”
Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins voted to confirm Nachmanoff, a Biden appointee, to the federal bench in a 52-46 vote in October 2021.
