1:18Now PlayingRaging wildfires in south France have forced the evacuations of more than a quarter million people.
About 220,000 of the evacuees are in the Gironde region, which includes Bordeaux. By Monday, the pace of the fire there had slowed after burning more than 100,000 acres. But it still has a “life of its own,” according to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
"We are dealing with a phenomenon that is entirely unprecedented," he said.
Neighboring Spain is facing its own large wildfires that have also evacuated tens of thousands of people from their homes.
Both countries have already surpassed their average acreage burned by wildfires. France has hit a new record, with more than 242,000 acres burned.
Meanwhile, a fourth heat wave is forecasted to hit Western Europe, which will likely make firefighters' jobs more difficult.
