9:10Now PlayingVice President JD Vance, said Sen. Lindsey Graham “could make anybody laugh and he could make anybody feel at home,” during his remarks at a memorial service in the late senator’s honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday.
Vance described Graham as "swashbuckling," and highlighted the late senator's fascination with -- and love for -- people “from all walks of life.”
“I learned something from Lindsey Graham, the way that he interacted with people,” Vance said. “The way that he was so interested in what was going on and what was moving people and what was motivating them and what they were interested in, that affection and love of people was obvious even on the campaign trail.”
Vance credited Graham for securing Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. During Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, he faced allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. Graham lashed out at Democrats, calling their treatment of the nominee “despicable.”
“And that is how I will choose most to remember my friend Lindsey Graham. He saw that the Senate at its very worst could be a venue for character assassination,” Vance said. “But because he loved people, he saw that the Senate at its very best could be a deliberative body geared towards persuading people, and that's what Lindsey Graham did in that case, and in so many others.”
Graham’s remains will be taken from the U.S. Capitol, where he served for more than 30 years, to the Washington National Cathedral for a funeral service.
