Shades of Princip: Russian Ambassador Andrey Karlov Shot in Ankara Turkey By Police (REACTION)

On Monday, December 19th 2016, Russian Ambassador Andrey Karlov was shot by Turkish police officer Mevlüt Mert Altintas in Ankara, Turkey during a speech at an art gallery. The shooter, who has been compared to Gavrilo Princip - the man who shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro Hungarian Empire - was apparently acting as or paid to be security for the event. After he committed the act, he shouted words in Arabic and in Turkish including “allahu akhbar” and “Aleppo, revenge!” Religion is obviously one motivating factor behind the attack. Also race, as the former Ottoman Empire has roots that spread very far across the Middle East.

Many in Turkey and abroad are placing the blame for this attack on Fetullah Gulen, a man widely seen as an enemy of the state in Turkey that is currently being harbored in the United States. That has not been confirmed. What is clear at this point in time is that this attack is provocative and meant to send a message to Russia’s involvement in Syria, more specifically - Aleppo. Mainstream media and officials in the West have been portraying Russia and Iran’s involvement with Syria as one of unnecessary foreign intervention that is causing the Syrian people much grief. But the reality is that they are there at the behest of the Syrian government, led by Bashar Al-Assad, to eliminate the threat of encroaching radical forces.

Syria is a secular nation as is Turkey. Recently, there was a failed coup attempt in Turkey. The coup was seen as a reaction against encroaching non-secularism in the state. Which is also a big part of the conflict in Syria, Turkey’s neighbor. Religion in that region has always been the problem. The majority of the Muslim population in the Middle East appear to be normal people. But there will always be a portion of said population that becomes radicalised, in one way or another. That fact reared it’s ugly head again on December 19th.

Vladimir Putin has come out to say that this attack is provocative and was meant to disrupt normalization between Russia and Turkey who have had differences since at least the Ottoman Empire days. Hopefully, the end result is that a full investigation happens and the individuals responsible for organizing this attack are brought to swift justice. The last thing anyone would hope for is for the issue to go unresolved and become another Gavrilo Princip / Franz Ferdinand situation that may be the last straw for an already fragile planet.
