10:51Now PlayingAdam Saleh, a known YouTube prankster, got himself caught up in a controversy alleging that employees of Delta Airlines were removing him from a flight due to simply speaking Arabic. In a video widely shared online, he insinuated that it was a racist move by the airline due to his Muslim / Arab background. Much of mainstream media took the story and ran with it. Within a very short period of time, the hashtag #BoycottDelta was trending all over social media. Not much of a background check on the individual making the charges against Delta was made. No witnesses were on camera speaking about it. The airline didn’t have time to respond and give their side. Video of the incident in question was not released, just Saleh’s reaction afterwards.
Therein lies the problem. Mainstream media often laments about the proliferation of “fake news” as a result of Donald Trump’s campaign and resulting presidency. At the same time, the media appears to only label certain types of news fake. That which goes against their respective narratives. End result of that type of biased scrutiny is a situation where real news goes unnoticed or labelled as fake, news that could be true pending investigation is immediately passed off as fake (pizzagate), and news that actually is fake is passed off as real. If the media had done a little bit of digging into the background of Adam Saleh and also spoke to the witnesses on the plane, then this would not have been a news story that in any way insinuated Saleh was a victim.
Adam Saleh is a YouTube prankster with well over 2 million subscribers, which is a lot. He has a worldwide presence and name recognition. All for staging fake stunts on and around airplanes revolving around his Muslim background. And then videotaping them for his YouTube channel. Dressing up in traditional attire and counting backwards from 10 in Arabic to scare people. Hiring a fake police officer to accost him and a friend dressed in traditional attire. And the list goes on!
This should be a lesson to the mainstream media. As the great philosopher Denzel Washington said - the media should focus on being right, not just being first. Because if you don’t read the paper, you’re uninformed. If you do read it, you’re misinformed.
