*PARTIAL* Government Shutdown Begins! What Does It Mean?

A government spending bill with $5 billion in funds dedicated towards securing the Southern Border of the United States with a wall is limbo and as a result, the Government has partially shut down. The spending bill passed the house, but hit a stonewall once it reached the Senate where it needs 60 votes to pass. Invoking the so-called “nuclear option” where only the simply majority is needed to pass a bill is not an option because several Republican Senators refused to vote that way… and every Republican vote is needed in this circumstance.

Mainstream media and others have been labeling this as the “Trump shutdown” in an effort to make it seem worse than what it is. One thing to note is that only 25% of the Government’s funding is in question here. Also, this would be the third shutdown of the year. They are usually brief and while some federal employees may not get paid on time during the shutdown, they are all eventually paid. It may cause some inconvenience to said employes and regular people, but it is not the end of the world.

Senators will be debating the issue on Saturday, December 22nd 2018 to figure out a way forward. Trump has postponed his Mar-A-Lago Christmas retreat in order to get the wall funding pushed through. The stage is apparently set for negotiation. Democrats want to give $1.6 billion for “border security” and no wall while Republicans want to give $5 billion for the wall. They may meet somewhere in the middle to end the shutdown. If the funding is enough to actually build the wall, then it doesn’t really matter. If not, then the country may find itself in this very same situation not too far in the future.
