No on EVs? Commissioner Fisher, Johnson and Taylor vote against electric vehicles

Commissioners Fisher, Johnson and Taylor all voted no on buying electric vehicles with already collected TSPLOST dollars, apparently wanting an entire new referendum so they can buy gas powered cars with property tax dollars.

Electric cars are more efficient, they make our air cleaner and they save us money, but three Athens-Clarke County Commissioners don’t support them.

“I’m just leery about the climate right now for electric vehicles, what path it’s going down. I’d hate for us somewhere down the road to get these things and get stuck with them and not have any use for them.”

With all due respect, Commissioner Fisher, that doesn’t make any sense. The $3.3 million purchase includes 36 charging stations! As long as we have electricity, we’re going to be able to use them.

This also doesn’t make sense because the purchase was already approved by the voters in TSPLOST 2023!

“This is a TSPLOST project. We cannot just reappoint these funds somewhere else. There is a process for recalling a SPLOST or a TSPLOST project that requires a referendum.”
