The novels of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett - and the film noir movement that drew so heavily on their narratives - have created a romanticised notion of the kind of people that work as private eyes, and the nature of the work that they do. Philpott spends some time with a handful of real-life private investigators, to see if their day to day experiences have any similarity whatsoever with the adventures of Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe et al. Featuring contributions from Barrie Quartermain, John Walsh, George Girt, Bill Messenger and Cyril Fluck.
