4:56Now PlayingJames Burke is in Germany, to look at a new design of running shoes. The new shoe uses nylon and glass reinforced studs and soles, instead of the traditional spikes - an innovation which is claimed can save an athlete a fractional amount of energy with every step.
James explains how this is possible, and how the designers can make such a claim, using the extraordinary 'mechanical athlete' device that is used to test the shoes.
