An explosion-like sound was heard across parts of London, with people living in Essex, north and west London and Stevenage among those tweeting to say they had been woken up by the noise.
The two jets were launched from the RAF base in Coningsby, Lincolnshire just after 4.00am GMT and intercepted an unresponsive aircraft.
The UK Ministry of Defence later tweeted that the two typhoon aircraft were scrambled "after an aircraft lost communications in the UK airspace".
"The aircraft was intercepted and communications re-established," the tweet read. "The typhoons have now returned."
London's Metropolitan Police also confirmed the large bang was caused by the RAF aircraft.
