Sep 8, 20201:38Now PlayingChicago's public schools began the year Tuesday with all-remote learning because of the coronavirus pandemic. But Mayor Lori Lightfoot is holding out hope that virus numbers will drop enough that students could still return to classrooms before the school year is over.
"We're going to be guided by what the public health numbers tell us," Lightfoot said. "We're starting to see some progress in our numbers, but we are not there yet."
Lightfoot also shrugged off a threat from President Donald Trump to cut off funding to school districts teaching the 1619 journalism project, which focuses on the impact of slavery in the United States.
Lightfoot says any attempt to cut off funding in Chicago would result in a court battle.
"The president has no power to try to take funding from any school district. And if he does, obviously, we will see him in court," Lightfoot told reporters.
