0:49Now PlayingUK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday urged the public to maintain "maximum vigilance, maximum observance" of the lockdown rules to suppress the coronavirus pandemic.
Johnson made the comments while on a visit to a newly created mass coronavirus vaccination centre in Bristol.
The Prime Minister warned tougher restrictions may be needed if the Government feel that the current measures "are not being properly observed".
"Where we have to tighten them, we will", he said.
The UK government’s goal is to vaccinate 15 million people by mid-February, targeting people over 70, front line healthcare workers and others who are especially vulnerable to the virus.
That will protect people who account for almost 90% of coronavirus-related deaths and may allow restrictions to be eased, the government says.
More than 600,000 people age 80 and over will begin receiving invitations this week to get the coronavirus shot at new large-scale vaccine centres around England.
The vaccination drive comes as the UK sees a steep increase in infections and record numbers of COVID-19 patients being hospitalised, with many experts warning that the situation is more dire than it was when the country went into its first lockdown last spring.
The Office of National Statistics estimated that 1 in 50 people in England had the virus in the most recent week.
