The presidential inauguration of Joe Biden on Wednesday will be unlike any other in modern history.
Just two weeks after an unprecedented attack on the U.S. Capitol and a year into a global pandemic that’s killed 400,000 Americans, this Inauguration Day will be less about celebrating the historic moment of welcoming a new president to power and more about averting any number of potential disasters. Gone are the massive crowds on the National Mall and the raucous presidential parade—in their place are a sea of American flags and a military presence not seen in the nation’s capital since the Civil War.
The FBI and other members of law enforcement are working behind the scenes to track and disrupt active plots to threaten violence at and leading up to the inauguration, according to current and former U.S. officials. More than 20 public safety agencies are involved in the security planning, led by the U.S. Secret Service.
So far the increased vigilance seems to be working. Protests that were predicted to turn violent over the weekend remained largely peaceful. One man was arrested at a security checkpoint near the Capitol on Friday with an unregistered handgun and ammunition in his car, according to police.
Plans for the dramatically scaled-down celebrations could still change. While Biden and Harris expect to take their oaths outside the Capitol, Biden’s incoming communications director Kate Bedingfield acknowledged to ABC that could change if security measures require it.
