1:21Now PlayingChicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is welcoming students back to school after a long and bitter fight with the teachers union over COVID-19 safety protocols delayed that reopening.
On Thursday, Lightfoot greeted students at William H. Brown Elementary School on the city's West Side.
Evidence of the bruising negotiations with the union were seen as the mayor made a point of thanking everyone from principals to custodians who "never left" the schools. Lightfoot barely mentioned the union.
On Thursday, pre-K students and special education students were welcomed back. Students in grades K-8 will be welcomed back over the next few weeks.
