The pileup on Interstate 35 near downtown Fort Worth happened as a winter storm is dropping freezing rain, sleet, and snow on parts of the U.S.
A spokesman for the Fort Worth ambulance service said 36 people were taken to hospitals. Several were critically injured.
Daniel Segura, a Fort Worth Police Department spokesman, said he'd never seen anything like this in his 20 years of service.
"We have plenty of investigators that are walking the whole incident scene," he said. "It is going to take a very lengthy time to have a full and complete report."
He urged area drivers to stay safe and keep their distance: "Slow down, please."
In Austin, emergency officials said that more than two dozen vehicles were involved in a pileup on an icy road, and one person was injured.
Elsewhere, ice storm warnings were in effect from Arkansas to Kentucky.
