1:26Now PlayingDemocratic mayoral primary winner Eric Adams joined essential workers Wednesday for a parade honoring those who helped get New York City to the other side of the pandemic.
Adams is promising to guide the city to a new era of safety and prosperity. As he marched along the parade route, supporters cheered him on. Some even going as far as calling him "the new mayor."
He told reporters it was time to honor essential workers with pay equity, not just a parade.
"We need to honor them with pay equity. We need to honor them with the right standard of living. We need to show them the respect they deserve. We learned that from COVID-19," he said as supporters chanted his name.
Adams bested a large Democratic field in New York's first major race to use ranked choice voting. Results from the latest tabulations showed him leading former city sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia by 8,426 votes, or a little more than 1 percentage point.
The Associated Press called the race for Adams based on mail-in ballot results in the June 22 primary that were added to the vote count Tuesday.
After a challenging time brought on by the pandemic, Adams reflected on why he was the person for the job Wednesday.
"Just being out here with these first responders, they see me as one of their own. You know, they see me as a person that has gone through what they are going through. And no one understands that better than me. This is such a perfect moment for just an everyday person to lead this city," he said.
