1:58Now PlayingHaitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in a nighttime assault on his home, threatening to plunge the impoverished, gang-ridden nation deeper into chaos as rival factions jockey for power.
Moise was murdered by “highly trained and heavily armed” killers who stormed his residence in the capital Port-Au-Prince at around 1 a.m., according to the nation’s interim prime minister Claude Joseph.
First Lady Martine Moise was also wounded during the attack and may be evacuated to Miami for treatment, Haiti’s ambassador to the U.S., Bocchit Edmond said in an interview. Under the constitution, Joseph must now take the helm, Edmond said.
