1:13Now PlayingThe New York nurse who was given the first COVID vaccine in the country joined other essential workers Wednesday for a parade honoring those who helped get New York City through the pandemic.
Sandra Lindsay, who said she felt "honored and humbled" to be chosen as the parade's grand marshal, told The Associated Press prior to the start of the event that it was important for her to continue encouraging folks to get the jab.
"I want to remind people that we're celebrating the progress, but the pandemic is not over. So, our best defense still remains getting vaccinated," she said.
"We have made tremendous progress, but we know that the variants still threaten us. And we can beat this, we just need to get vaccinated. That's the way we beat the variant," she later added.
The event Wednesday will honor a range of people, including workers in health care, transportation, education and infrastructure, and kicks off at Battery Park before traveling up Broadway in lower Manhattan, the iconic stretch known as the Canyon of Heroes.
Previous parades have honored world leaders, celebrities and winning sports teams.
Lindsay, who works at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, volunteered to get the shot and has said many times that she felt it important to lead by example.
She got her first shot in December followed by the second jab in January.
