Aug 24, 20212:00Now PlayingPentagon Press Secretary John Kirby told reporters that the Department of Defense still plans to meet the end of month deadline despite pressure from G-7 allies to introduce an extension. “We are absolutely still aiming toward the end of the month,” he said.
Kirby said that 21,600 individuals had been evacuated from Afghanistan by the U.S. and its allies over the last 24 hours. He declined to provide an update on the total number of Americans left in the country, saying only that “several thousand” were still there. “Our plan is to continue this pace as aggressively as we can,” Kirby said when asked whether the aim was to continue evacuating more than 20,000 individuals a day.
Asked about Taliban warnings that U.S. troops should leave by Aug. 31 or face consequences, Kirby said “the Taliban have been very clear about what their expectations are.” He said that he was “not seeing much dissonance” between the Talbian’s public pronouncements and private communications with the U.S. on this point.
