The blasts, which were reportedly caused by a suicide bomber, happened after Western nations warned of possible terrorist attack at the airport where thousands of people are trying to get in to leave the country.
The first explosion struck the airport's north gate, while the second massive blast occurred about 30 minutes later close to the Baron Camp, a military base near the airport used by coalition forces in the past.
Unconfirmed reports said at least 40 dead bodies and 120 wounded were transferred to Kabul hospitals.
Thousands of U.S. and coalition forces soldiers were stationed inside the airport while Taliban members provided security for the outside of the facility.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid earlier said that at least 13 people were killed including children and guards who were protecting the airport. At the time of writing, 52 had been injured.
Civilians and U.S. service members are among the casualties. At least three U.S. servicemen and some Taliban guards were said to be among the injured, the Pentagon said on Thursday.
The Taliban "strongly condemns" the bombing outside the Kabul airport, saying it happened at an area where U.S. forces are responsible for security.
Gun fire could still be heard as of 20:30 local time, reported Tolo News TV, citing witnesses.
