as posted by the channelPresident Joe Biden hosted new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the White House Monday amid a growing Russian crisis with Ukraine.
Germany has faced criticism for refusing to send lethal weapons to Ukraine, bolster its troop presence in Eastern Europe or spell out which sanctions it would support against Russia.
Still, in an Oval Office photo opportunity before their meeting, Biden insisted the U.S. and Germany are on the same page.
"We're working in lockstep to further deter Russian aggression in Europe and address the challenges posed by China and promote stability in the Western Balkans," Biden said.
He said the two leaders would also discuss the global coronavirus pandemic and climate change, among other issues.
For his part, Scholz said the U.S. and Germany are "working intensively together...fighting against Russian agression against Ukraine."
Scholz called the discussion "an important meeting at a very, very important time."
The White House meeting is Scholz's first Oval Office sit-down since he took over leadership of his country in December.
Tensions have soared in recent weeks as the United States and its NATO partners express growing concern that a buildup of about 100,000 Russian troops near Ukraine means that Moscow plans to invade its neighbor. Russia denies such intentions.
