Jordan can only afford to lose four Republicans, unless Democrats help him or some lawmakers don’t vote.
Jim Jordan of Ohio, the House Judiciary Committee chairman, is the second and latest Republican speaker-designate. An ally of former President Donald Trump, Jordan won the backing of 152 Republican House members in closed-door voting on Oct. 13. That’s short of the 217 votes needed to be elected in a party-line vote on the House floor, where Democrats are expected to stick to voting for their leader, Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
But Jordan since has picked up more public endorsements. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who has held the No. 2 leadership post under McCarthy, was the party’s first pick, but he dropped out on Oct. 12 after determining he could not reach the 217 votes needed.
