0:19Now PlayingSeveral people were reportedly wounded on Monday after a car drove into a crowd in the German city of Mannheim, according to a report by tabloid Bild Zeitung. It was not immediately clear whether the incident was an intended attack or an accident, according to the report.
Local police said in a statement that an operation is underway in Mannheim’s city center and advised citizens to avoid the area. It didn’t provide details.
The incident happened less than three weeks after a 24-year old Afghan male drove into a labor union demonstration in Munich and injured almost 30 people. The German government has been under pressure to boost domestic security after several violent attacks in recent months in which the suspected perpetrators were immigrants. The incidents triggered calls for stricter immigration controls and stoked political controversy in Berlin.
