0:51Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump said he doesn’t think a minerals deal with Ukraine is dead despite his very public feud with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
“It’s a great deal for us,” Trump told reporters Monday, adding that “I’ll let you know tomorrow,” when he addresses a joint session of Congress.
He said Zelenskiy “should be more appreciative” of the billions in US assistance his country has received to fight Russia’s invasion. Asked whether he might end US sanctions on Russia as part of a peace deal, Trump said “we’re going to make deals with everybody” to end the war, including European nations.
Trump’s relatively optimistic assessment could revive prospects for a deal that appeared to be scrapped last week to give the US revenue from Ukraine’s minerals. It came hours after he again tore into Zelenskiy, saying “this guy doesn’t want there to be peace.”
Earlier, Zelenskiy expressed a willingness to meet with Trump again, despite Friday’s open confrontation at the White House, if the US president invites him for a “serious” encounter. But Zelenskiy also was quoted as predicting that the end of Ukraine’s war with Russia is “very, very far away.”
