British Prime Minister Keir Starmer picked up the phone in London and tried to convince the US and Ukrainian presidents to get back to the table.
Ultimately, UK officials failed in their attempt to salvage a US-Ukraine economic deal that had been close to being signed before the calamitous news conference, according to people familiar with the situation. Trump’s team denied the request to return to talks, saying that time was needed for tempers to cool, said the people, who asked not to be named while discussing private conversations.
The effort showed the extent to which Starmer is eager to use his unique links between the Trump’s administration and European leaders. It’s a role he resumed on Saturday when he welcomed Zelenskiy to Downing Street, barely 24 hours after the wartime leader was sent away from the White House empty-handed.
