And it came with the backing of the European Union, no less.
As she lands in Washington to meet the US president, with whom she has a strong ideological affinity, tariff relief and defense are on her mind.
If she pulls it off, it will mark a significant diplomatic win for the Italian leader and firmly enshrine her in the big leagues with Germany and France. But there is also the risk she comes back empty handed, no longer able to sustain a tricky and tenuous balancing act.
The implications of Trump’s erratic actions on both economic and foreign policy aren’t lost on the Italian officials who since January have been readying the prime minister’s meeting with him behind the scenes, at times complaining in private that no firm date was forthcoming from the White House, people familiar with the matter said.
Meloni and her entourage have privately been shocked by some of Trump’s remarks since his inauguration — including by his recent comments that countries were “kissing [his] ass” in an attempt to negotiate a way out of his punitive tariffs, made just hours after her visit to Washington had been confirmed.
